Winter school in Czech Republic (December 2016)

Part of its training activities, the ASCIMAT project organised a 2-day workshop/winter school dedicated to PhD students and researchers at FZU, CERN, ILM and UNIMIB but also young scientists from the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering at the Czech Technical University (FNSPE-CTU).

The event took place the 1-2 December 2016 at the Technology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences, located in Prague. All together the winter school attracted 21 participants with a scientific background in advanced scintillating materials. The objective of this workshop was to teach them complementary soft skill topics to support their research and innovation activities. To do so the ASCIMAT partner, Intelligentsia Consultants, developed two (2) tailored training modules with a number of individual/group exercises.

On the 1st of December 2016, Giles Brandon introduced the European R&D Framework Programmes and especially Horizon 2020. After a presentation of the programme structure, funding schemes and successful projects relevant to scintillating materials, the training focused on funding opportunities under the Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions -
Individual Fellowships and ERC Starting Grants (download the presentation).

On the 2nd of December 2016, Flavien Massi made a presentation on How to develop creativity. The training module focused on the Innovation and how to efficiently merge cartesian thinking (sciences and logic) and creativity (imagination and free spirit). Several playful games and exercises were developed for the young scientific audience (download the presentation).

The winter school programme was largely appreciated by the participants and the ASCIMAT team will continue to organise similar training workshops on transferable skills topics throughout the project.
